The focus of the Early Childhood science program should be on fostering in children an interest in, wonder of, and an appreciation for the world in which they live. We are living in times where an awareness of the damage humans have caused to Earth’s natural environment causes serious concern. How do we approach environmental education in these troubling times?
I was lucky to teach ecologist Peter Warshall’s grandchildren in my Preschool. Here are some remarks Peter made on teaching children about nature:
We make a mistake if we only present the gloomy side of environmental science. School science programs can provide back-grounds that are needed to help in promoting positive change. Involve students in decisions and actions. Let them know they can make the world a better place. Teach them to be bio-gladiators.
