Today we conducted Author’s Chair [Link]. The children who participated as audience members had decent questions and a few comments. As a result, one student thought he might like to make changes to his writing. This was the teachable moment to introduce a mini-lesson on editing.
I told the children, “Writers often wish to add something to their writing- or sometimes, simplify or remove something they’ve written. We call this editing.” A few children decided they wanted to edit their writing. A few added more detail to their setting. One added another character.
Despite their young age and limited writing abilities, Preschool children can conduct a successful Writer’s Workshop. They can understand the writer’s craft, processes, and create an authentic and living piece of their own.
