The World Economic Forum reports a school is being built in India which is to focus on happiness. All parents want their children to grow to be happy. Clair Browne, PhD writes in Psychology Today, quoting Aristotle, “Aristotle teaches us, “He is happy who lives in accordance with complete virtue and is sufficiently equipped with external goods, not for some chance period but throughout a complete life.” [Link to Article] I’ll note, Aristotle speaks of sufficient, rather than excessive, external goods.
So, what would a Preschool devoted to the development of happiness look like? It is certainly a movement away from test scores a race to the top. Children would be virtuous and self-sufficient. It would be a cooperative community wherein everyone’s needs were met equitably and sustainably. Children will grow to be adults who are self-determined but socially responsible.
